9/1/01 Question 124

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am a student and I was asked to define early childhood education, please help answer this question.
Thanks
ECE Definition

Dear ECE Definition,

Early childhood education is any "formal" teaching between the ages of 3 and 8.  It has guidelines like elementary and secondary education. Anything a teacher does for this age group should be DAP.  (developmentally appropriate practice)  It means that the type of learning is different. Most children at this age (ECE) have short attention spans and need concrete activities.  Abstract thoughts are beyond their comprehension  until much older. Centers (or focused play areas) are the most common way of teaching ECE.  "Hands-on" learning is a common term used to describe this type of exploration. Hope this answered your question.
