9/13/01 Question 128

Dear Preschool Teacher,
My 2 year old knows all the uppercase letters and I wanted to introduce the lower case letters. Should I put them all up with the uppercase or just do the lowercase letters. They are the magnetic letters on the fridge. My question is how should I introduce the lowercase letters.
Lowercase Letters

Dear Lowercase Letters,
If your child learned the uppercase letters from the magnetic letters on the fridge, it only makes sense to let him or her practice the same way for the lowercase letters.  Just don't push the practice sessions. Sometimes, children will get bored with an activity after a while.  Have fun, there are lots of years to learn letters and only one time they are two!

Dear Lowercase Letters,

You might want to just start with a few, like maybe the letters in your child's name. Keeping the first letter capital.  Then add a few at a time, similar I suppose to how you introduced the upper case letters.  Your child is still very young, so please don't push them or force it!
