10/11/01 Question 133

Dear Preschool Teacher,
What would your response be to a parent's inquiry of what did my infant/toddler learn today? This is a non-academic school. But all play and activity is learning. Isn't it??
Learning is play

Dear Learning is play,
Infants and toddlers are constantly learning.  Every minute they are awake they are learning. It follows a pattern that all children  must follow when they are developing.  I would find some good information to give to parents that ask what their infant/toddler learned today.  Instead answer what happened that day.  I recommend not telling parents when their child
does something for the first time at school.  Let the parents tell you about it first.  Especially rolling over, crawling and walking.  These are milestones that many working parents miss.  It doesn't hurt to let them think they saw it first!

Dear Learning is play,

I've been working in education for 20 years.  Way back in college one of the first thing I was taught was that "a child's play is his work".  Check out NAEYC.org for listing articles about play. http://www.naeyc.org/resources/ National Association for the Education of the Young Child.
