5/10/02 Question 156

Dear Preschool Teacher,
What kinds of activities can I do with 3-5 year old children using sand and water.  I've already buried things in the sand table but what else can I do?
Fun in the Sand and Sea

Dear Fun in the Sand and Sea,,

The possibilities here are endless!!! Get lots of small containers and scoopers, eyedroppers for water (and those things you use for basting turkeys) and let the kids get to work.
In my experience they can spend a very long time entertaining themselves and experimenting!
Just be prepared for soaked clothing and a wet floor for the water play.

Dear Fun in the Sand and Sea,,

In water, you can try sinking and floating experiments.
Measure sand and water with measure cups.  Pour with cups and funnels.  Mix colored water together to make new colors.  Many household utensils are fun to use in the sand and water.  Mix sand and water together  and mold with different containers.  Compare wet sand to dry sand.  Try an egg beater in the water table! Add ingredients to make bubbles ( soap and glycerin) and find objects that could be used as wands.  Or even just bend pipe cleaners into different shapes, dip into bubble mixture and blow! Use your fingers to write in sand.  There are even other substances you can put into the sand table, such as shaving cream, dirt, gravel, pine cones, and buttons.  Just be sure to supervise so it doesn't get into little eyes. Little cars can be used for imaginative play in sand or dirt.  Boats can be used in water.  The ideas are practically limitless!
