5/10/02 Question 158

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I have a four year old son who is still having trouble recognizing some colors. He confuses red, yellow and orange. Is this normal? Could this be a problem that should be looked into?
Mixed Up Colors

Dear Mixed Up Colors,

Is this something that you have been working with him for a long time--say since he was 2 or 3? If so, then I would probably check into there possibly being a problem. If you have just started working with you 4 year old to learn the colors, then I would keep working with him and give him awhile.

Dear Mixed Up Colors,

There are more occurrences of color-blindness in boys than in girls. Usually they  confuse red and green though.  They have tests for this.  It could just be an area that isn't mature for him yet.  A visit to an eye doctor or even your pediatrician could diagnose this problem.
