4-20-00 Question 31

Dear Preschool Teacher,
I am a Registered Nurse going to school for my bachelor's degree in Nursing. I am assigned to do a teaching project to a preschool class on the importance of hand washing. I would appreciate any tips you could give me as well as sites where I might find some pictures for them to color.
Thank you in advance!!

Dear Hand washing Help,
I usually do a unit on "Germs" every year.  Children have a difficult time understanding why we need to wash our hands so often.  Demonstrate how germs are spread by putting some baby powder in your hand and then shake hands with another child.  Let that child shake hands with another child.  Let them play with toys.  Let the children take turns putting powder in their hands.  They can "sneeze" in their hand to see how far a sneeze can travel. The children can "see" how germs are spread.
Another idea is to let the children put Vaseline on their hands.  Wash with cold water - the Vaseline doesn't come off.  Use warm water and soap - the "germs" easily come off their hands!
Have fun!
