3/15/01 Question 82

Dear Preschool Teacher,

Do you have any ideas on activities for the theme Week of the Young
Child in April?
Week Of The Young Child

Dear Week Of The Young Child,
We do a community helper theme on that week. We always get community people to come and share. We also ask local food chains to donate a meal for the children. Of course we make a large poster with all the children's names on it to thank them for their donations. This lets the children know that the whole town loves them.

Dear Week Of The Young Child,

I usually try to come up with ideas that they can make using their handprints. My first year we made a banner with different color handprints. The second year we made a rainbow out of their handprints.

Dear Week Of The Young Child,

I'm not sure if you mean at your school or for the community?  We have done both.  Craft and games booths work well for community activities. Include fun activities like "Spin Art," collages, playdough, easel painting.  Parachute play, ring toss, bubbles or oobleck is fun.
For school I would try activities that are unique for each child, so using their handprints or footprints works.  Rainbows, bees, butterflies, bunnies are fun handprint or footprint activities.

Dear Week Of The Young Child,

The main focus is on children, so feature their work.  Ask local businesses if you can display artwork and /or stories of  the children. Make a large sign to describe what it is all about.
